An Afternoon At The Fair

Yesterday, I took Dylan and Blake to the Tunbridge World’s Fair in nearby Tunbridge, Vermont. There are many fairs and harvest festivals in New England in the fall and I thought that it would be a fun way to spend the afternoon with the boys. It was so cute to see the excited look on his face as we went towards the gate and he began to see the fairgrounds. Once we got inside, Dylan told me that he wanted to play games first. We played a couple of kid – friendly games and he won a few little prizes. … Continue reading

Work-Life Balance: It’s A Family Affair

Although it may seem like work-life balance is an individual issue, you may be able to achieve a better work-life balance if you approach the issue from a different perspective. The perspective that I am referring to is not upside down while doing a headstand, nor is it sitting cross-legged and gazing intently at your navel. However, if either of those two positions is how you do your best thinking then by all means go for it. All joking aside, it may be helpful to approach work-life balance from the perspective of the family as a whole. Having a family … Continue reading

Family Fun At The State Fair—A Day Of Pig Races And Deep Fried Pickles

There aren’t too many places on the planet where you can watch a retired NASCAR announcer provide color commentary on a race between four pot-bellied pigs speeding around a sawdust track, and then 2 hours later gnaw unforgivably on a deep fried pork chop-on-a-stick. It happens daily at the Wisconsin State Fair. The annual 10-day event is famous around these parts for deep-fried everything, food-on-a-stick, a giant slide and world-class agricultural venues. What more could you ask for, right? That was my thought when I decided to brave the crowds (more than 800,000 descend on State Fair Park in Milwaukee … Continue reading

Love in the Afternoon (1957)

Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper star opposite each other in this romantic comedy, set in Paris. Hepburn is Ariane Chavasse, the daughter of Claude Chavasse, private investigator (Maurice Chevalier) who is best known for tracking down unfaithful spouses. His files are full of stories of deception, intrigue, and forbidden love, and Ariane has been reading them like novels, unbeknownst to him. His current client is sure his wife is cheating on him, and after following her around, Claude has the evidence. Madame X is indeed involved with an American by the name of Frank Flannigan (Cooper) a playboy who has … Continue reading

Starbucks Raised Its Prices

I don’t know if you noticed or not, but Starbucks has raised its coffee prices. This means that the chai latte or Oreo Cookie Mocha Frappuccino is costing you more this month. I confess that I hadn’t noticed, but that is probably because I rarely get a coffee out, unless it is a sort of emergency. For example, I am trapped in the car on a three-hour road trip or a four-hour round of errands, and it is the afternoon, and my only option to avoid a caffeine headache is the Starbucks at the rest stop or the strip mall. … Continue reading

Toddler Book Shelf – Virginia Lee Burton

There is something special about reading with children. Whether it is bed time or another quiet time during the day, inviting your toddler to enjoy a book with you can strengthen your bond and encourage your toddler’s natural curiosity. There are so many books to choose from, and I have found that there is no easy way to predict which ones will become Dylan’s favorites and which will be read once, or started and not finished because they did not hold his attention. I have found one author whose books Dylan absolutely adores. Virginia Lee Burton’s classic children’s stories from … Continue reading

A Fun Weekend In Maine

This weekend, I went to Maine with the boys and my husband’s parents. It has pretty much become an annual trip for us, and we go the same weekend every year so that we can go to the Common Ground Fair, which takes place in the town of Unity. The Common Ground Fair is a unique and special event that is focused on sustainability and environmental awareness. There are many educational opportunities for adults, and also many fun things for children of all ages. While we were at the fair, Dylan was able to try doing some new things. There … Continue reading

Inclusive Fun for Kids With Special Needs

Parents who have kids with special needs quickly discover that the majority of playgrounds were not designed to accommodate all children. Here is a brief list of places to play, and have fun, that do include kids who have special needs. We need more of these! Sky High Sports is an indoor playground with plenty of trampolines to bounce on and some foam pits to jump into. The Sky High Sports in Naperville, Illinois, sets time aside for kids who have special needs. On the first Tuesday of every month, from 3:00 in the afternoon until 6:00 in the afternoon, … Continue reading

Potty Learning On The Go

Tomorrow, the boys and I are headed out of town for the weekend. We are going to Maine to stay at my husband’s parents’ cottage, which just happens to be located less than an hour from the town where my favorite fair is being held this weekend. The trip would take about six hours, if we drove non stop. I have no idea how long it will actually take us, nor do I have any expectations of getting there at a certain time. You see, this trip could take a while because Dylan is on an important journey of his … Continue reading
