Celebrating Little Moments Of Joy

The days in the life of a parent of a toddler can be quite chaotic, and full of ups and downs. Today was a particularly challenging day for me, as was yesterday. Still, despite my feelings about how the past couple of days have gone, I can truthfully say that there have been some wonderful moments woven in among the not so wonderful ones. Sometimes when I feel like things are not going well and like I am failing miserably at being the kind of mom that I want to be, I take comfort in the good moments regardless of … Continue reading

Celebrating a Birthday Milestone

This week is a big deal in our house. There is just something about your youngest child turning 13…yes; my “baby” has hit the teen years. It is hard to believe that I am “officially” the mother of three teenagers. He has really been looking forward to this week, as I think he has been feeling a bit slighted as of late. I can’t deny the fact that for the past couple of months there has been a lot of focus on my oldest son. It’s the preparations and talks about him joining the Air Force, turning 18 just a … Continue reading

Buddhism For Mothers

A couple of days ago I started reading a very helpful parenting book. While this book has not helped me to solve any of my current toddler parenting dilemmas just yet, it has helped me to begin approaching them in a slightly different way. Before I launch into my description of the book and why I am enjoying it, I will offer up my favorite piece of parenting advice. That advice is to take what is useful and discard the rest. There is no one perfect parenting solution that will work for all families, so it is up to you … Continue reading

Getting Road Trip Ready

I just realized today that in just a couple of weeks, my husband, the boys, my parents, and I are going to embark on the biggest adventure that we as a family have ever had. In the past, I have pretty much been a seat of the pants type of girl when it comes to travel. I am not sure if that is such a wise approach to take on a road trip from Vermont to Florida that involves four adults and two kids, so I am beginning to do a little bit of planning. There once was a time … Continue reading

A Day In The Life Of A Stay At Home Parent

I am sure that anyone who is the parent of a toddler can probably relate to at least some of what goes on at my house. Sometimes, though, I find myself sitting here in disbelief thinking things like “Did that really just happen?”. Then I laugh. Of course it just happened. Being a mom is a lot of different things, and interesting is certainly a word I would use to describe motherhood. Some people ask me whether I get bored, hanging out at home all day with the kids. Since there’s never a dull moment here, there is no time … Continue reading

The Treasure Chest

‘Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.’ Robert Brault. This quote popped up on my computer yesterday and I think there is a lot of truth in it. In marriage enjoy the little things, like waking up together each morning, like celebrating Christmas together. For me one of the delights is being able to go to church together. I love sitting next to my husband at church and even more so on Christmas morning which has been and gone here in Australia. It’s lovely too to stand up the … Continue reading

The Christmas Spending Panic

It happened to me this weekend. We were in a toy store looking for one particular gift, and I could feel the tension rising. All around me, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles were all grabbing up gifts left and right. An item that my daughter admired was no longer on the shelf when I returned to the store 30 minutes later. Neither was the other two copies of it. It was late in a long day and I was tired. I grabbed up a couple of extra things for the kids in case they weren’t there later and headed to … Continue reading

The Christmas Shopping Challenge

My husband isn’t the type of person who likes stuff. He has books and he has some classical music CDs, but his wants are few, and this makes shopping for him very tricky. I love him and would enjoy piling presents under the tree for him, but what do you give someone who doesn’t want anything? When asked, he’ll say things like, “I have you. What more could I want?” While that’s really terribly romantic, and he gets major husband points for that, it doesn’t help when it comes to celebrating the holidays. If you’ve got a person like this … Continue reading

National Wildlife Day: How You Can Help

Last month I wrote about National Dog Day sponsored by the Animal Miracle Foundation. Today is another AMF sponsored day, National Wildlife Day. What It’s About Initially the woman who created these days, Colleen Paige, was going to have this one fall on June 6th. However, she changed it to September 4th to honor “the last day that Steve Irwin graced this planet.” The goal is to raise awareness of the non-domestic creatures those of us who are urban dwellers may forget about. The ones who are endangered or otherwise threatened, but who can be saved with a little help … Continue reading
