Blundering into Fights — And Getting Back Out

Do you ever sometimes feel like you’ve somehow stumbled into a fight and are not sure how it happened? When we go looking to pick fights we know what we’re up to, but sometimes it seems like all of a sudden we’re fighting with someone and we’re not exactly sure how it happened. This can happen between any two people but it’s certainly common in a marriage, just given that married couples are two people who spend so much time together. The silver lining of picked fights is that, although when we go looking to start one we’re not exactly … Continue reading

Getting the Routines Back in Order

Somewhere between the middle of September and the end of October, the morning and evening routines started to get out of whack. The kids bedtime tended to drift further and further into the evening, and the chaos in the morning started to increase. From tired melt downs to kids who forgot their homework folders or lunch, it was time to get things back into a routine and do it right away. Our family tends to be more on the creative side and less on the structured side. A house full of free spirits with no sense of time will ruin … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Halloween

Halloween is a little over a month away. I love Halloween. I love decorating the house and wearing anything Halloween themed. The people who live on the street where I grew up and my parents still live always make a big deal about Halloween. The teenagers at one house and their friends would all dress up as famous characters and haunt the house. Even though these were my brother and sisters’ friends, I wouldn’t go anywhere near that house. The house next door to that one served hot apple cider. The next house down tricked out the whole front yard … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Church

I’m not talking about the spiritual preparation that I’d like to be here…I’m talking about getting physically ready and making it to church on time (or at least somewhat close to on time). Before our baby came along, my husband and I were on time most of the time. Sadly, I can’t say that we were always on time as we both love to catch just a few more minutes of church. And with a 9:00 am Sacrament meeting, that can spell trouble. But we did pretty well. Now we have a baby, and I’m amazed at how much more … Continue reading

Getting Dressed

Is it a fight every morning to get your toddler dressed? Does your toddler love to dress themselves? Are you able to put the cute accessories on your toddler and accentuate their outfit or are they happier in a diaper and t-shirt? My son wakes up every morning asking to get dressed for the day. He also strips out of his clothes at the end of the day when he is ready to relax and run around in a diaper. The problem I have is keeping shoes on my son. He takes them off every time I put him in … Continue reading

Getting Ready to Read: Fun Letter Recognition Activities

How can you help your preschooler develop letter recognition, an important pre-reading skill? Here are a few fun ways to practise letter recognition without your preschooler even noticing! Go to a field, the muddier the better, preferably gravel. Snow works too. With a foot or a stick, trace various names or letters of the alphabet in the mud. It’s muddy fun, and it definitely shows the different lines required to create a letter. Play with your food! Make letter bread, letter pancakes, or letter vegetable and fruit slices. Hint: apples make good “c”s. If you’re feeling brave, get out a … Continue reading

Getting Ready to Shoot the Fourth

It doesn’t get more American than a Fourth of July BBQ with friends, family and fireworks. The ultimate summertime holiday is teeming with amazing photo ops from flags to family reunions, parades to pie eating contests. It would be a shame not to make the most of these Independence Day events. So grab your camera, charge up those batteries, go out and splurge on a new memory card (or extra rolls of film) and get ready to snap your loved ones in action as they proudly celebrate our country’s 232nd birthday. Fourth of July Parade I addressed the challenges involved … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Graduation

Whereas my daughter is far from graduating from school, she is quite familiar with “Pomp and Circumstance” (she uses the tune and inserts her own words: “Peanut butter and jelly… always sticks to my belly…”). She’s counting down the days to her friend’s kindergarten graduation. In addition, we have also been invited to my friend’s daughter’s 8th grade commencement. Even though it’s not my child marching toward her diploma I will still be bringing my camera along to the ceremonies. Millions of snap happy parents around the world will be aiming their cameras at their proud grads in the weeks … Continue reading

Getting Behind and Beyond Conflict

We definitely have our smooth and easy days in our home businesses—those days where we seem to be sailing along and getting along with everyone. There are also times, however, when we have conflicts with prospects, customers, clients, colleagues, or vendors. Some of those conflicts can last a while as we attempt to work through and negotiate what is best for both parties. Getting beyond a conflict and putting it behind us can be a big challenge as well and take some care and attention in order to preserve relationships and our business reputation. I think the first step to … Continue reading
