How Safe Is That Sandbox?

Dylan loves to go to the playground. It does not matter which playground, or where it is, the moment he hears the word “playground” he drops whatever he is doing and runs for the door. We have a few playgrounds around here, and I like to mix it up by taking him to different ones. One thing that I am trying to figure out, though, is how to keep him out of the sandboxes at the playground. I’m not completely against sandboxes, however recent events have left me a bit concerned. A few days ago, I brought Dylan to a … Continue reading

Playground Safety Tips

With summer come more frequent trips to the playground. Unfortunately, accidents can and will happen, if you’re not careful. So before you head out the door, keep these simple rules in mind. (1) Make sure the equipment is appropriate for your child’s age and height. Ideally, the playground should have areas set aside for little ones and one for older kids. This assures the babies won’t get hurt by the antics of the older kids. I have noticed that at several of the park playgrounds I have taken Tyler to many older kids use the equipment especially the swings. And … Continue reading

Oh No! Diaper Rash!

I always knew that the road from diapers to the potty might be a little rough, but I did not expect anything like this. We have switched from disposable diapers to disposable training pants, and have been using disposable training pants for a couple of months now. Dylan has been getting better and better about using the potty, and now most of the messy stuff makes it into the potty. On the liquid side of things, he’s getting about fifty percent in the potty and the other fifty percent in the training pants. One morning about a week and a … Continue reading

Maybe He Does Not Realize That It Is A Vegetable?

If you are experiencing or have experienced a period of time when your toddler refuses to eat vegetables, you are not alone. In fact, most toddlers go through some variation of this phase at one time or another. For about the past month or so, Dylan has been known to declare that he “does not like vegetables” when they are placed on his plate. Parents differ in how they approach the no – veggies situation. At our house, the way that I am dealing with this phase of Dylan’s development can be summarized as “put them on the plate and … Continue reading

Prevent Lawn Damage from Pets

It is pretty easy to figure out that this apartment complex welcomes pets — not just because of inconsiderate neighbors who don’t pick up poop, but because of the urine burn spots around the grounds. Many pet owners — whether you own property or rent — suffer with dead, bald spots on the lawn thanks to pet piddle. But your lawn doesn’t have to look like Swiss cheese! Here are some tips to help minimize lawn damage from your pets. Water your lawn deeply. A long, deep watering can encourage grasses to put down deeper roots — up to two … Continue reading

Prevening Worms in Pets

Worms can be dangerous to pets and to people. Here are some things you can do to protect your pets and your family. Remove feces from the litter box and/or the yard regularly. Dog poop should be cleaned out of the yard at least once every week. Follow instructions on your cat litter for litter box cleaning, but it’s best not to let feces sit for too long. (At the cats only boarding facility, we change the litter box twice every day for each cat, but we’re pretty fanatical about cleaning!) Keep a close eye on your child’s sandbox — … Continue reading

Reuse from A to Z! (K-L)

Recently, I was going through my kitchen, finding all of the tools that we seldom use, such as spatulas. I was going to toss them out or donate them to the thrift store, until I realized that I could in fact reuse them. Here are some more reuse ideas in the alphabet. K Kitchen tools: Safe kitchen tools, such as rubber spatulas and wooden spoons can be given to the kids for playtime. They can use them to pretend to cook or in the sandbox. Measuring cups as also great for the sandbox, as well as the bath tub. L … Continue reading
