Building Your Toddler’s Vocabulary

The other day while we were at the playground, Dylan and I received a wonderful compliment. A woman who was playing with her little girl on the swing next to the swing where I was playing with Dylan remarked that he seemed to have quite a large vocabulary for someone who is two and a half years old. The woman is a day care provider, so she has a lot of experience with toddler talk. Her comment is very meaningful to me because I feel that one of the most important things that I can do for Dylan is to … Continue reading

Looking Through The Eyes of a Toddler

There’s nothing like spending time with a toddler to remind you how extraordinary the seemingly ordinary things in life are when you see them through the eyes of a child. The other day, I was at the mall with my boys. We went to the restroom, and Dylan discovered what seemed to him to be the eighth wonder of the world – the hand dryer. We have encountered other hand dryers before, but those were the kind where you press a button and hold your hands under the nozzle. He thinks that those are interesting, but the kind that we … Continue reading

Toddler Paradise

I recently started back to school full time again, well technically four credits over full time, my schedule is packed, I mean really packed. Lately our lives have revolved around getting up, going to daycare/school, and coming home to do homework, get ready for bed, and start all over again. Not much fun for a three year old, but all that is about to change. Logan is getting a little bored with the schedule, I don’t blame him, I am too, so tomorrow is all about him. We are going to create our own little toddler paradise. Try looking at … Continue reading

More Ways to Get a Toddler to Eat

We have all heard about hiding good foods into standard fare, such as extra vegetables in pasta sauce (one of my least favorite ways of getting a child to eat, since it involves trickery rather than changing habits), but what are some other ways of getting that picky toddler to love new and healthy food? Here are some of the methods that have worked for my family and/or the families of some of my close mom friends. The Clean Your Plate Club, Updated When I was a child, I was told that if I finished everything on my plate that … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: October 2008

If you had an October baby, congratulations! I hope that you will spend some time with us here at Families.com, as we bring you the latest news and tips for you and your family. Here is the Baby Blog month in review for October. October 1st Insect Repellent and Young Children Protecting my children is the number one priority, but one thing that I tend to avoid is insect repellent. I figure that putting additional chemicals on my kids is not the best idea, that is until now. These days, a mosquito bite is not just an annoyance, but it … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

The Sense of Sight – Looking at the World Through Rose-Colored Glasses

The sight may seem to be the easiest of the senses to promote for your little one and the truth is – it is the easiest. After all, you just have to hold things up for them right? The answer to that is yes and no. You see, your toddler doesn’t have your ability to filter out all the background sights to focus on individual objects without some effort. The world is a kaleidoscope of images, colors, shapes and sizes. You can play games like peek-a-boo to sharpen their acuity for focusing on specific objects. After all, when you are … Continue reading

I Love You Anyways

On a recent trip to the library, one of the books that Dylan picked out is “Olivia”, by Ian Falconer. He has asked me to read that book to him so many times that I have lost track. You know what, though? Even if I have read it to him fifty times I could read it to him fifty more. I just love that book. Why do I love “Olivia” so? I probably have as many reasons as the book has pages. One reason that I love it is that the main character, Olivia the piglet, reminds me so much … Continue reading

Settling In To Our New Family Arrangement

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Dylan was going through some tough adjustments as he became a big brother. Now that Blake is almost seven weeks old, we have all had a chance to get used to the way our family is now and things are settling down a bit. I am proud of how far Dylan has come in the past few weeks as far as understanding and working through his feelings about the experience. One thing that I am very happy about is that he no longer thinks that I am going to go away and … Continue reading

First Trip to The Science Museum

The other day, I had planned to go to the grocery store. Lately, I have been taking the boys to a playground near the grocery store for a few hours before going shopping. That arrangement has made everyone happy and makes for a fun day trip because it is about a 45 minute drive in each direction. When we got up in the morning, I realized that there would have to be a change in plans because it was raining. Rather than rescheduling grocery shopping to another day, I decided to find a rainy day activity in the area near … Continue reading
