Meet the Teachers Night

All our parents visited during the last three weeks of July. Having so much extended family around is exhausting. I wish we lived closer to all our families so everyone could see everyone more. In the meantime, visits are infrequent and packed full of activity. One of my favorite moms’ group events, Manicures and Munchies, was not long after all the parents had departed. I wanted to go, but didn’t buy my ticket fast enough. I wanted Chris to be well rested first. By the time I went to buy, the event was sold out. I was disappointed, but it … Continue reading

Meet The Teacher Night

School starts back next week and tonight we are going to meet the teachers. This is always an interesting day for our family. When you have a family that does not match there is usually some explaining to do. With our family we also have to tell the teachers the basics of seizure first aid just in case the boys have a seizure at school. Luckily that has not happened but it is better to be safe and informed than sorry and scared. We always explain to the teachers that the children have been adopted and that they all have … Continue reading

School Scrapbooking – Meet the Teacher Ideas

Last night was ‘Meet the Teacher’ night at our elementary school. It seems early doesn’t it? But in reality, we are in a year-round school system and we start our new school year tomorrow. Oddly, on a Thursday. There are pro’s and con’s to being in school ‘year-round’ as they call it. Plenty of longer breaks, half days and other luxuries that more traditional schools don’t enjoy. My children have been in both traditional and year-round, and I have never even thought of creating a scrapbook layout depicting the difference and how I feel about each one. That is certainly … Continue reading

Parent Night

Parental involvement in school is a key element to a student’s success. It is essential that parents know what their child is doing at school both academically and behavior wise. However due to working and busy schedules, some parents rarely step inside of their child’s classroom. Therefore, it is crucial that schools and teachers make every effort to get parents involved. Many children are now back at school. They have met their new classmates and new teacher. Because it is equally important for parents to also get acquainted with their child’s new class, many schools and teachers host back to … Continue reading

How Teachers Can Help with The Transition to School

A child’s first educational experience is very important and crucial to his or her academic career. Early education teachers must be careful to create a positive and uplifting mood for students. As a prekindergarten or kindergarten teacher there are several things that can be done to help enhance the students’ experience. Below, I have outlined some suggestions to help a child get the most out of his or her first year of school. First plan activities carefully. Make sure that you choose lessons that are age appropriate for the children. Teaching over their head can be very frustrating for children. … Continue reading

Supporting New Teachers

I love teaching. Besides being financially stable enough to stay home and be with my children, there is no other reason that I would quit the profession. However at times, I find my job stressful, time consuming, and heart breaking. Teachers deal with all types of stress. There are mandated programs that I do not believe in that I have to teach. There are parents that will complain no matter what I do. There are children that I may never be able to reach. There are tasks that have to be completed after work hours. There are some decisions that … Continue reading

We Teach Children, Not Lessons

Last night, we had our stake primary leadership training meeting. We had a great meeting and I left feeling inspired to be a better primary president for the year ahead. I wanted to share a few things that I learned from that meeting. First, they asked us what was the ONE thing we wanted our kids to learn this year. People gave answers such as that Heavenly Father loves them, or to Choose the Right and recognize when they make right choices, etc. They told us to keep whatever that one thing is in mind throughout the year as we … Continue reading

What Keeps Parents Out of the IEP Process?

IEP stands for “Individualized Education Plan”. It is designed to clearly describe the goals that a child who has special needs will be helped to achieve in a given school year. That team is supposed to include the child’s parents and teachers. However, there are certain things that keep parents out of the decision making process. Most schools do not intentionally make an effort to keep parents out of an IEP meeting. The majority of parents do their best to make sure that they are involved in the decisions that are made regarding the education of their children. Despite this, … Continue reading
