IIHS Finds Half of All Booster Seats Do Not Fit Properly

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated 83 booster seats. They found that around half of them do not fit children properly. It might be time to check and see how well your child’s booster seat fits, and what the IIHS thinks of it. Booster seats are a slightly more “grown up” version of “infant seats”, or “convertible car seats”. All are designed to safely restrain babies and young children with a five-point harness. It helps to ensure the physical safety of infants and small children in case the vehicle they are riding in is involved in a traffic … Continue reading

Reasons Not to Add Your Boyfriend To Your Car Insurance

There are many situations that are perfect for adding your boyfriend too. If you are going to the beach, it will be fun to bring your boyfriend with you. If you are moving, adding your boyfriend to the group of people helping you move can make things a whole lot faster. Adding your boyfriend to your car insurance, however, is not necessarily a good idea. Car insurance companies look at a lot of different factors when they assign a rate to a customer’s auto insurance premiums. One of those factors is the gender of the customer. Women who have good … Continue reading

Keep Toddlers In Rear-Facing Carseats

The news came out today that the official recommendations for child safety seat use were updated. The news wasn’t news to me, however. I had been telling people about the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for years. The child safety seat law is that children must remain rear facing to one year old and twenty pounds. The AAP recommends that children remain rear facing to the weight/height limit of the seat or at least until age two. We all know how soft a baby’s skull is. Baby’s skull has an official soft spot on top too. I don’t know that … Continue reading

New Car Seat Guidelines

I was watching the Today show this morning when I heard that the American Academy of Pediatrics had changed their regulations for child car seat safety. With two children still in car seats, I was listening with all ears. The most surprising is their recommendation to keep your child rear-facing in their car seat until the age of two. Additional changes were that kids should remain in a booster until reaching at least 4 ft. 9 inches in height. This could happen anywhere between the ages of 8 and 12 years of age. Also, do not put your child in … Continue reading

Sunshine Kids Car Seats

I am kind of a car seat crazy person. I want my kids to be safe. You hear stories all the time about seats not being installed correctly, or about an accident that could have been avoided if only the child had been strapped in correctly to a car seat. So, when I had my first baby, I made sure to do my research. I found an acceptable infant car seat, but when it was time to move her up to a bigger one, I wanted one that was going to last, and one that was strong, and durable. I … Continue reading

The Empty Car Seat

Recently I experienced the pain of an empty car seat. Since I’ve been taking care of our son during the days we’ve been constant companions in and out of the car during the day. I’ve found myself constantly flipping the rear view mirror down or up to check on him when we’re stopped at a light or stop sign. He is my car buddy and it is comforting to know that he is there. Recently my wife went to a baby shower for one of her close friends and she wanted to take our rambunctious child along for the ride. … Continue reading

The Basics of Horse Care, Pt. 3

Today I conclude my interview with Professional Hunt Seat Horse Trainer Holly Stello on the basics of horse care, and why anyone who wants to can own a horse. You can work your way up to having the knowledge needed to have a horse as a pet. Having that knowledge influences the cost, because then you could pay less to board it by doing more for your horse on your own. Or you could always just be a working student and still get to spend a lot of time around horses. Holly says working students are common in the equestrian … Continue reading

Can You Have Too Many Car Seats?

Car accidents are the number one killer of small children, though safety seat use has helped a lot. I am passionate about car seat safety. Using car seats properly and appropriately is a relatively easy and painless step to take to try to keep our children as safe as possible. I wish that more people would research car seat safety and keep their children rear facing as long as possible. Convertible car seats have high rear facing weight limits in an attempt to keep children in the safest position. Unfortunately, too many parents think that turning their children forward facing … Continue reading

The Shopping Cart Cover

The shopping cart cover does seem a bit frivolous and unnecessary at first glance, but its usefulness extends beyond keeping germs at bay. My purpose for getting one of these never had anything to do with germs in the first place. I have a lot of reasons I like my shopping cart cover, though, and here are a few: 1. It’s a crumb catcher. In my family, grocery shopping time is snack time. Snacks ensure that my time shopping is uninterrupted and somewhat peaceful. As long as my 18-month-old has crackers and a sippy cup, he will let me shop … Continue reading

More Car Seat Safety

On July 23 we welcomed a new baby into our home. She was a day old. I realize that I write about toddlers not babies, so you may be wondering why I’m starting this blog with Baby E, but she’s pertinent to the topic. We have a Graco Snugride infant carrier. I have transported four children in the seat. It’s a great and safe seat. Baby E was so small, though, that the seat’s lowest strap slots were above her shoulders and as tight as the straps would go were not tight enough. I got a Chicco Keyfit so Baby … Continue reading
