The Potty Learning Journey Continues

Today, Dylan took another step in the direction of declaring his independence from diapers. The way that we are approaching potty learning with Dylan is to let him lead the way. Yesterday I casually mentioned to him that we would be going shopping for clothes soon. He asked me if he could get real underwear. I told him that since he was doing well with learning to use the potty, we could get some underwear because we do not go shopping that often and we would want to have the underwear close by for when he was ready to use … Continue reading

Potty Progress

If there is one thing that parents of toddlers should know about potty training, it is that each child will follow his or her own unique path to potty independence. There are many ways to approach potty training, and each method works well for some children. The question of when to begin potty training is as big of a decision as the method that you will use. At my house, we are employing a laid back, no pressure approach to using the potty. We bought Dylan a potty when he was about two years old. He was curious about it, … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part XIII

Potty training continued into week four with great success. Sometimes our son would announce that he had to go pee or poop and sometimes he would just go by himself (very exciting). He continued to request gum for his rewards which I soon realized was a little too much since it is not entirely consumable. He would end up with a mouthful of gum that would become an obstacle to eating meals. Either way using the potty was not our son’s problem at this point. Our newest potty training development had to do with his clothes. He started telling us … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part IX

We had a very successful first week in which I did not change one poopy diaper or clean up more than three accidents! I was very pleased with our son’s potty training success. However, I was not one hundred percent sure that using the potty was an established habit for our son. As week two of potty training began I had my fingers crossed that we would not take any steps backwards in our potty training progress. Our son still seemed really into using the potty and he found his chocolate rewards very motivating. Sometimes he would go potty and … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part VIII

He was surprisingly upset that he peed in his underwear. I reassured him that it was okay and that sometimes accidents happen when we do not stop what we are doing, or watching in my son’s case, to use the potty. I got him into some dry underwear but he was still a little sad. We shared some milk and cookies and some hugs. He continued to use the bathroom for the rest of the day. The following day, we continued potty training. As soon as he awoke, he used the potty and we put him in underwear. It was … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part VI

We tried to encourage him by telling him that he would be such a big boy if he were to go poop on the potty. We told him that he would get two chocolates if he went poop on the potty. Despite our motivating words, he was very much against the reality of pooping on his “new” big boy potty. Once it became clear that he was not going to use the potty to go poop, we switched from using words, to physically picking him up and putting him on the potty. He continued to whine but my husband sat … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part II

I backed off a little giving him his potty training space. He continued to show no interest in the short weeks before our daughter was born. My goal of having him potty trained before his sister was born was not going to happen and to be perfectly honest I did not have the motivation either. As we approached Christmas, I bought some “big boy” underwear to go in our son’s Christmas stocking with the hope that having his own underwear would peak his interest in potty training again. Unfortunately, “big boy” underwear were entirely inconsequential to our son especially with … Continue reading

Single-Parent Potty Training

Potty training is a daunting task for any parent. Every child is different and they are all ready at different times. Some are ready as early as 18 months old, others are closer to 4 years old. Listen to your child. They’ll let you know when they are ready. My son was two and a half when he first started getting really excited about potty training. I think he went over 15 times that first night just to hear Mommy and Daddy’s excitement. He called Grandma over and over again to tell her all about it. The next month we … Continue reading

When Will She Be Ready To Potty Train?

In one of my first blogs I wrote about potty training my toddler. I insisted at that time that she wouldn’t go to high school in diapers. Now I’m thinking that she may indeed never potty train. She is still displaying none of the signs of readiness. Maybe I just need to ignore what the experts say to look for and plunge ahead armed with chocolate kisses, patience, and a lot of paper towels. Not that long ago I bought the cutest toilet seats for Jessie to sit on and she was happy to sit on them. She was excited … Continue reading
