Say Yes To The Mess

Today I realized that while Dylan has had a few forays into the wonderful world of art, he has probably not had nearly enough opportunities to express himself creatively. Why? Well, to put it simply, I am terrified of the possible mess and destruction that could result. Before you label me a terrible parent who deprives her toddler of any creative outlet for fear that he might make a mess, let me explain. When Dylan uses crayons or colored pencils he makes wonderful creations on paper. For about five minutes. Then he wants to take the crayons or colored pencils … Continue reading

The Conclusion to My Big Time Mess Up As a Parent

My fellow blogger Michele Cheplic, reminded me of an unfinished end to a blog I had written about a huge mistake I had made with my daughter. There was an uncertainty to her future and where she would end up for high school. To recap, the county I live in has a terrible school system. It gets worse by the time children make it to high school. So my boys were put into another school district by what is called “open enrollment.” When it came time to sign my daughter up for open enrollment, I apparently failed to put on … Continue reading

Words You Should Never Say to a Teen

There are some things that you should never say to a teen. They are statements like, “Hold on.” “We’ll talk later.” “Just give me a few minutes” and the list goes on. What exactly am I talking about? When your teen is ready to talk, you better be ready to listen. This isn’t an issue of who is in charge; this is an issue of being available at the moment your teen is ready to talk. Because let’s face it, teens aren’t always ready to do this. You sometimes lose valuable moments and meaningful conversations when you don’t stop what … Continue reading

Yes, It’s More Celebrity Divorces

Another week, another slew of celebrity divorces. Okay, maybe not a slew, but two more celebrity couples are hitting the divorce court. I was surprised when Eva Longoria and Tony Parker announced they were separating. Have we ever seen a picture of these two where they weren’t smiling and looking all in love? Despite the photos of happiness, Longoria files for divorce last week from Parker, citing irreconcilable differences. Longoria is seeking spousal support. Wait, isn’t she like a television star? Oh, maybe she is seeking support because it appears that Parker was cheating on her. Longoria told her old … Continue reading

Lindsay Lohan Gets 90 Days in Jail

Things just keep getting worse for Lindsay Lohan. Those that were hoping to see her make a recovery a la Britney Spears are going to have to wait a bit longer. Lohan was sentenced to serve 90 days in jail Tuesday because she missed alcohol counseling sessions, which was a violation of her probation. In case you missed it, in addition to the alcohol counseling sessions, Lohan was sentenced to wear a SCRAM bracelet after her 2007 DUI conviction. On June 7th, the SCRAM bracelet went off, but Lohan reportedly have a zero reading four hours later. Lohan told the … Continue reading

Listening to Your Body (and Interpreting the Message)

Two out of the last three days, I was attacked by a ninja. A ninja nap. It snuck up on me after my usual post-work routine: walk the dogs, feed the dogs, feed myself. I found my limbs sluggish and my eyes heavy, so I gave into the ninja nap. Three hours later, I woke up. (Both times.) Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes a nap catches me off-guard. I’ve got things planned, work to do… but I find myself sinking down into sleep instead. It can throw off my whole schedule for the rest of the day, but sometimes … Continue reading

Can a Messy Home Make you Spend More?

I believe that the answer to the above question is a definite yes. A messy home can cause all kinds of spending traps. At least, I try to tell myself this when I am just not in the mood to pick things up or purge things that aren’t useful or really wanted. Having a non-messy home can be a great way to save money on the sneak while boosting your mood (assuming that having a non-messy house makes you feel good). Here are my reasons for believing that a messy house can make you spend more. The biggest reason, I … Continue reading

No-Mess Pumpkin Decorating

Make that minimal mess. Either way you avoid the sloppy, goopy, labor-intensive task of gutting a pumpkin in an effort to create a bucktoothed jack-o’-lantern. This kid-friendly pumpkin decorating project doesn’t involve a single knife or razorblade. Rather, you and your children can go wild with a little paint (potentially messy, yes, but easier to wash out of hair than slimy pumpkin guts). This year say goodbye to the monstrous mess and hello to these adorable pumpkin characters made from inexpensive materials that can be found around your house.
