Simple Ways to Bond with Your Toddler

by Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger

Parenting is not rocket scientist. However, it often requires functioning on little to no sleep (unless you were blessed with one of those angel babies that zonks out at 7 p.m. and doesn't rouse until 7 the next morning OR you were gifted with a large house and a high tolerance for demonic screaming, which made night weaning a breeze) and a LOT of patience.

A well-rested mommy begets a patient mommy, and nothing makes a toddler happier than a happy mommy. Your undivided attention is all your adorable tot really wants, so find a way to make time for the two of you. If you are looking for simple ways to make bonding time more enjoyable then consider the following:

Toddler Tea Party

Take advantage of the summer sun by taking your toddler's tea set outside. If you don't have a tea set, then simply use plastic bowls, cups, and a pitcher, and fill them with water. Next, let your toddler practice pouring the water into the cups. The activity will help your tot build coordination skills. You can also use the tea party to teach her about the properties of water and how paper towels and sponges can absorb big spills.

Ball Time

Balls and toddlers go together like peanut butter and jelly. Another fun summer activity is to gather a variety of balls and note the differences in their size and color while throwing them to your toddler. When your tot tires of throwing, then sit on the ground facing each other with your legs apart and toes touching. Roll the ball back and forth without it going out of bounds. The activity helps with hand-eye coordination and builds arm muscle strength.

Dance-O-Rama

My daughter loves to dance, but to add spice to her boogie time I play music that coincides with animal movements. For example, when you play songs with a loud beat have your child stomp like an elephant. Conversely, during a quiet song have your toddler pretend she is a mouse tiptoeing past a sleeping lion.
