Summer Fun for Toddlers

by Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger

Looking for some ways to make the most of summer's beautiful weather while enjoying one-on-one time with your toddler?

Here are a few of my favorite ideas for summer fun:

OUTSIDE READING TIME

Reading is a great activity for kids of all ages. During the summer months spread out a blanket under a big tree and read books to your toddler that have pictures of things you'd find outside in the summer, such as birds, butterflies, flowers, insects, the sun and clouds, etc. Point to the pictures and tell your child what each item is. You'll be amazed at how fast your toddler will catch on and expand his vocabulary.

SWIMMING

This activity can be as easy as setting up a kiddie pool in your backyard and watching your toddler splash about. Another idea is to enroll your toddler in formal swimming lessons. While swimming for toddlers is a good way to beat the heat, remember that children this age should never be left alone around pools. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "teaching your child how to swim DOES NOT mean your child is safe in water," especially toddlers.

GARDENING

Give your child a small shovel or a large wooden spoon and some dirt to dig in. While he digs talk to him about the different flowers he can plant. Consider planting a few flowers and you and your toddler can watch them grow as the summer progresses.

DAY TRIPS

Make the most of the temperate weather and head outdoors for a field trip. These outings don't have to be expensive or terribly involved. A simple trip to the park, zoo or museum can be an enjoyable experience for a toddler. What's more, the trip will give you a chance to get out of the house and explore new surroundings.
