Nibble + Squeak Welcomes Toddlers

Many families consider dining out to be a relaxing treat. The experience might not be so easy for parents of toddlers. There is reason to be concerned that your toddler might throw a loud tantrum that causes other people in the restaurant to complain. Fortunately, there is a dining club that is actively welcoming toddlers (and their families). Nibble + Squeak describes itself as: a unique dining club for “parents with pipsqueaks”. It hosts food events for babies and toddlers and their caretakers (parents, grandparents, and more) at its restaurants. Right now, there is a Nibble + Squeak dining club … Continue reading

Toddler Road Trip Wrap Up

Last night we returned to our home after a nine day vacation with my parents. Four out of those nine days were spent on the road, driving for many hours. This post is for any parent who is wondering whether it is a good idea to take such a long trip with a toddler (or, as in our case, a toddler and a baby). I am not sure if there was a specific reason that our trip went relatively smoothly, but it did. There were certainly moments where things got pretty intense, but we worked through them. When I stopped … Continue reading

Toddler Imaginations

I have read in many articles that it is wise to support children in their imaginary play. I have tried to do this with my son. I have found his imaginary play very entertaining and amusing. Only in one scenario do I find it to be a problem. My son has decided that, at meal times, he wants to pretend to be a cat. We have cats and my son has played with them since he was old enough to walk. My son has recently started placing his plate on the floor and eating on all fours. This bothers me. … Continue reading

Toddler Behavior in Restaurants

We’ve all seen screaming toddlers in nice, quiet restaurants. Before I was a mother, I resented the parents who took their children into the restaurant and didn’t make them behave properly. Now, I sympathize with them. I am one of them. It isn’t that I don’t try to make my toddler behave properly when we are in a restaurant. I try. It’s just that I am not always successful in my attempts. My son’s behavior seems to depend on a number of factors: fatigue and hunger. One of the things that I learned quickly is that my son hates waiting … Continue reading

I Spy Little Book Book Review

The I Spy Little Book by Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick is a great first “seek and find” book for your toddler. You will be quite surprised at what your little one knows that you may think he does not. Identifying words to pictures is a fun way to spend time with your little one and so valuable to their development. This seek and find board book is the perfect size to stick in your purse when you are going out the door with your toddler. The I Spy Little Book has approximately 26 pages, which include pictures and words. … Continue reading

Save money at the buffet

Buffets are a great choice if you would like to take the whole family out to dinner, but don’t want to spend a fortune to do it. There may be a buffet restaurant called either Hometown Buffet , Country Buffet, or Old Country Buffet located near where you live. The restaurant goes by different names, depending on what part of the United States it is located in. You can count on finding the same kinds of family friendly food at all of these restaurants. There is a search engine on their website to help you find the buffet that is … Continue reading

Playground Precautions

I have been taking my son to the playground at our local park for more than a year and up until this week, I didn’t think much of it. I thought it was a nice outing that allowed us to get some fresh air and a change of scenery. It had not occurred to me to take any special precautions. He is, after all, just a toddler. Normally, we go to the playground and there are only a few kids there. My son stays close to me and plays in the area designed for toddlers. I can see everything that … Continue reading

Keeping Table Manners in Perspective

Yes, table manners are important. Knowing which fork is for which and how to eat without one’s elbows on the table do matter—BUT, I also think we need to keep these things in perspective. In my opinion, learning table manners should be age appropriate and shouldn’t be such a focus as to take away the pleasure and enjoyment of a family meal. I think that it can be surprising how much kids pick up just by parental modeling—without nagging and reminders, they do tend to assimilate all sorts of behaviors (good ones and not so good ones) just by what … Continue reading

Traits of Foster Children

The foster / adopt training that we took informed and warned us about some of the behaviors and traits that we would see when we took foster children into our home. I am not a special needs expert, although I know a lot more now than I did then. Rather than try to analyze what we saw, I want to report it so that others who try fostering will not be surprised. In previous articles, I have discussed fits, rages, and insecurity. Children who have been hungry sometimes do peculiar things. Even though they were being fed regularly, the boys … Continue reading
