Toddler Diaper Changes at 30,000 Feet

I keep seeing the same commercial over and over again. It features a mom who declares that her toddler will be potty trained in time for an upcoming family camping trip. The mother claims that the trip was the impetus for getting her tot on the potty-training bandwagon. The commercial never reveals how the potty training goes or whether the family makes it to the campgrounds sans a box of diapers, but I digress. The point is I’ve known many a mother who has vowed that her child would be out of diapers in time for an important trip. For … Continue reading

Traveling with Toddlers: Layover or Not?

When I took my 20-month-old daughter on a 10-hour flight to Hawaii the last thing I wanted was to have her fall asleep right as our connecting flight was about to land. The thought of having to switch planes and tote a sleeping toddler around the airport while juggling my carry-ons was all the incentive I needed to shell out extra money to book a direct flight. But that’s just me. If your toddler is not a napper, then a layover provides the chance to have your son or daughter run off some steam. The break also allows you to … Continue reading

I’m referring to long car rides. Travel experts recommend stopping every three hours or so and allowing your toddler to run around at pre-selected rest areas. Pack a ball to play with and use the time to visit the restroom. You can also schedule a pit … Continue reading

R&B Great Teddy Pendergrass Dead at 59

R&B great Teddy Pendergrass died yesterday of colon cancer at the age of 59. The singer had been fighting the disease since it was diagnosed in 2009. Pendergrass’ career began in the early ‘70s as the drummer for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Once he jumped forward to sing on stage, he became the band’s lead singer of hits such as “I Miss You,” “Bad Luck,” “Wake Up Everybody,” and “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Pendergrass left the group in the late ‘70s to pursue a solo career and found great success with hits like “The More … Continue reading

Good News for Laptop Lovers Taking Flight

I can’t count how many times I have been stuck behind an annoyed business traveler at an airport security checkpoint who spends precious minutes complaining to Transportation Security Administration agents about having to take his or her laptop out of its bag. I stand there (holding my carry-ons, my child and her backpack) staring at my watch contemplating how to politely tell my fellow flyer how much quicker we could all make it through the line if he would simply close his mouth and open his bag. It’s the rule. So deal with it and stop wasting other travelers’ time … Continue reading

Cracking Down on Carry-Ons

Weeks ago when American Airlines announced it would be charging passengers $15 to check in their first piece of luggage (and $25 for the second bag) every travel analyst in the country echoed the same comment: Beware of an impending crack down on carry ons. Sure enough a few days ago American Airlines announced it will be clamping down on the size of carry-ons (and you can bet other carriers will follow suit in a timely manner). American is the first airline to issue a statement regarding carry-ons. According to an American spokesperson, the airline usually adds extra staff during … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Pet Airport and Airport Pet Peeves

PET AIRPORT On our last trip to Hawaii my animal loving 3-year-old was delighted to find that she was sharing an airplane with a friendly Terrier. She had a blast playing with the pup in the security line, but couldn’t figure out why the doggy wasn’t going to be sitting next to her during the flight. Well, I just learned that if one company has its way there will be fewer furry distractions in the security line at the Denver International Airport. According to city officials, a boarding facility for dogs, cats and other pets is in the planning stages … Continue reading
