TV Falls on Toddler

Before our home could be licensed as a foster home, we had to do a great deal of baby proofing. We would have done it all anyway, as we wanted to provide a safe environment for all children in our care. All furniture that is tall and can tip has been anchored to the wall. A toddler very close to me met a tragic end because he climbed up an unanchored dresser to get to the TV on top. He would have been two not long after the accident. We have an enormous TV in our living room. There’s no … Continue reading

Adoption in the Little House TV series, Season 9 and Final Movie

This is the last in a series of blogs dealing with adoption in the popular, still-airing-in-reruns show Little House on the Prairie. In season nine’s two-part opener, “Times are Changing”, Almanzo’s brother dies. Their niece Jenny will now live with them. They are perplexed at how to help her deal with her grief and with the changes in her life. Also in season 9 is “The Wild Boy”. A deaf boy has been kept in a circus show and drugged to act as “the Wild Boy”. Jenny Wilder, Dr. Baker and Mr. Edwards discover his true nature. Although the judge … Continue reading

The Bigger They Are The Harder They Fall

You’ve heard of the Food Network’s hit show “30 Minute Meals,” well, what about “45 Minute Falls”? It’s not the title of a new reality show, but it could be. Unfortunately, for some families reality has hit a bit too close to home. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a child is rushed to the hospital every 45 minutes due to TVs falling on top of them. The nightmare gets worse when you realize that most of these kids are not simply suffering a broken arm or leg due to TV tipping; rather, safety experts say many children die … Continue reading

Another Round of Babyproofing

I may have mentioned that my daughter is getting married. She is marrying her childhood sweetheart, it’s a very long story but the great news is that I’m getting a bonus granddaughter. My little Lillie Bean is just over a year old and at a very curious stage. Now having been a single mom of a pre teen and then a teenager for many years now, we are in no way a baby proofed household. I’m having to remember all the things I did when Hailey was little to keep her safe. If you are the single mother of a … Continue reading

New Couch

We recently found new homes for our cats. The newest, which we got when we moved to Texas five years ago, was accepted back by the shelter that adopted her out. We flew the other two to Caboodle Cat Ranch in Florida. We had to move the cats out because my husband’s allergies could not live with them anymore. It was sad but necessary; I’ve had all three since they were kittens and Whiskers was 13. Now we have to go about ridding our home of all traces of the cats so my husband’s suffering will completely end. I emailed … Continue reading

The Brave

So maybe there are more of you out there than I thought. When I wrote “Trick-or-Treating Minus the Parents,” I figured I would hear back from moms and dads whose children trick-or-treat in New York high-rises (with bellman) and don’t worry about kidnappers or other weirdo preying on their costumed kiddos running solo from floor-to-floor. Apparently, there’s another group of parents I overlooked: The “we live in the country and know all of neighbors and our kids have been trick or treating solo since they were toddlers and they are still alive” sect is quite an outspoken bunch. As I … Continue reading

How To: Protect Your Child’s Vision

Protecting your child’s precious eyesight is an important task for parents. But do you know what steps you should take to protect your child’s eyes? How about common vision myths? The current issue of Parenting offers an eye-safety checklist, along with information on pinkeye, emergency care and vision myths and truths. First a test. True or false? Sitting too close to the TV will damage your child’s eyes? This is actually false. I tell Tyler all the time not to sit too close and my mother told me the same thing but there is actually no evidence that sitting too … Continue reading

What We Are Saving For!

In a previous post I shared how Hubby and I have a long term emergency fund and a short term emergency fund, so far, using the same account. Our account are separate on paper, so we can keep track of the cash and were we want it to go. We’ve also got a written list of items that aren’t part of our monthly expenses, but we need to save for each month: Presents: Christmas, Birthdays etc. These type of items come up almost every month. My toddler gets invited to a birthday party – a grandchild has a birthday – … Continue reading
