Preschool Primer Part 1 – Is Your Child Ready?

Recently, it dawned on me that at some point in the future Dylan will not be spending all of his days at home with me. Preschool is a topic that I have not yet given much thought, so it is time for me to learn what it is all about. Today I decided to start at the beginning, with the question of determining when a child is ready to begin preschool. Dylan will be two and a half years old this month. That is the age at which many preschools begin accepting children into their programs. For some reason, I … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part VI

We tried to encourage him by telling him that he would be such a big boy if he were to go poop on the potty. We told him that he would get two chocolates if he went poop on the potty. Despite our motivating words, he was very much against the reality of pooping on his “new” big boy potty. Once it became clear that he was not going to use the potty to go poop, we switched from using words, to physically picking him up and putting him on the potty. He continued to whine but my husband sat … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part V

I was determined that our son be potty trained sooner rather than later. During the course of our potty training efforts he had in fact used the potty to pee every so often and we even got him to poop on the toilet once, but our efforts were met with inconsistency. I knew that our son was perfectly aware of when he had to go to the bathroom. He did have some interest in using the toilet on and off for the past six months. During that time I offered him a reward, a piece of organic chocolate (I tried … Continue reading

Potty Training Our Son Part IV

We continued putting our son in diapers for several more weeks. During this time he also found the potty book and started asking us to read it to him again. After reading the potty book to him for what seemed like the millionth time, I started to ask him again when he thought he would like to go pee and poop in the potty like Joshua. We tried again and spent the next few days at home so that our son would have easy access to the bathroom. Unfortunately, the only results that came of our latest attempts potty training … Continue reading

Potty Training 101

Potty training isn’t one of those “one size fits all” kind of things. Every child is unique, they develop at different rates. One child may be ready to be completely potty trained at 18 months and another may still be struggling at 4. You may have to try several different strategies before you find one that works for you and your child. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while, most kids aren’t potty trained in a day. The first and most important thing when it comes to potty training is knowing when your child is ready. Can she stay … Continue reading

Finally Potty Training, Part 2

Read my previous blog to find out how our day was supposed to go. Here is how our day went. Jessie got up at 8:30 and we ate breakfast and watched TV. Jessie went with me when I put my contacts on and she informed me that she wanted to potty train. How did she know? I told her she was in luck and that’s what we would be doing today. At 9:00 we went to change clothes. I got out all her panties and Jessie told me she wanted to wear Hello Kitty. I laid out all five pairs … Continue reading

Finally Potty Training, Part 1

Today’s the day. I’m so tired of diapers on the toddler. Today is the day that we are going to actively and aggressively potty train. Jessie’s been showing signs of readiness. I am optimistic that we could be in diapers only at night after today. I am so ready for today. I have our day planned. We’re going to be casual and hang out in our jammies watching cartoons. At 9:00 we’ll change clothes and put on big girl panties instead of diapers. The plan is to drink a lot. I was supposed to get a special drink she doesn’t … Continue reading

When Will She Be Ready To Potty Train?

In one of my first blogs I wrote about potty training my toddler. I insisted at that time that she wouldn’t go to high school in diapers. Now I’m thinking that she may indeed never potty train. She is still displaying none of the signs of readiness. Maybe I just need to ignore what the experts say to look for and plunge ahead armed with chocolate kisses, patience, and a lot of paper towels. Not that long ago I bought the cutest toilet seats for Jessie to sit on and she was happy to sit on them. She was excited … Continue reading

Potty Training: Start ‘Em Early

There’s been lots of pooping on the potty going on at my house lately, and no, my husband and I do not have the stomach flu. I’m talking about our 1-year-old. Yep, you heard me – she’s pooping on the potty. Before you start rolling your eyes, calling me one of “those crazy moms who starts potty training a week after her child is born,” hear me out. I didn’t plan to be an early potty trainer; it just happened naturally. One day, when my daughter was about 11 months old, I was sitting next to her on the floor, … Continue reading

Stress Free Potty Training

Today was a luncheon presentation with my moms’ group. The presentation topic was Stress-Free Potty Training: A Commonsense Guide to Finding the Right Approach for Your Child. The speaker was Peter L. Stavinoha Ph.D, co-author of the book. Grandma is visiting so she was able to go to the luncheon with us. Grandma, Jessie, new Baby E, and I sat together with another mom. Mom had the fish and I got the cheeseburger. At previous luncheons I got a kid’s meal for Jessie, but she wouldn’t eat it. I shared my burger with her today and was impressed with how … Continue reading
