Why Toddlers Love SpongeBob Squarepants

by Monica Garrett | More from this Blogger

Many toddlers, including my son, love the cartoon, "SpongeBob Squarepants." SpongeBob offers a lot of entertainment for toddlers, who otherwise have a short attention span. Although many parents don't care for this cartoon, it can actually be good for children.

SpongeBob offers a lot of music and most all toddlers love music. They can sing along to the songs in the cartoon and practice their unique dance skills. My son is adorable when he tries to copy the dances in the "SpongeBob Squarepants" episode featuring, "Band Geeks." This is one of our favorite episodes.

I don't think I have ever met a toddler who didn't love cartoons. SpongeBob features all of the things that toddlers love about cartoons. It isn't as educational as some of the newer programs aimed at teaching preschoolers but it does hold some value.

Some of the lessons SpongeBob has learned in episodes we have watched include:

*Never to steal. Patrick Star, SpongeBob's best friend, stole a balloon, intending to borrow it. It burst and the turned themselves in. It turned out it was "Free Balloon Day" but they didn't know that.

*Never litter. This is actually shown in a few episodes we have seen.

*Conserve water. In one episode, SpongeBob soaks up the water that Patrick left running and then goes around watering everyone's flowers to show Patrick that you need to use water in a responsible manner.

*Work ethic. SpongeBob has an excellent work ethic which is portrayed in most all episodes of the cartoon.

*Being courteous. SpongeBob tells Squidward that he should be courteous to the customers at the Krusty Krab.

It is great that cartoons teach kids some of the basics of getting along with others. They encourage toddlers to share and play well with other kids. All of this while providing entertainment are reason enough for me to allow my son to watch them. I realize there are other more educational shows but SpongeBob Squarepants definitely does provide entertainment for our family.
