Why Toddlers Whine

My son’s new thing is whining, which I find very annoying. I want to understand why he is doing this and I’m trying very hard not to lose my patience with him. It is the constant sound of the whining that bothers me. While explaining this to my mother, she asked me how I could handle the tantrums he throws and not the whining. I answered that whining means he isn’t mad enough or upset enough to throw a tantrum, but he can’t just be okay with whatever is going on. I know this isn’t the scientific version of whining … Continue reading

Curse of the Car Cart

There I stood. I stood contemplating which cart I should choose for that day’s shopping quest. That’s where it all began. I relive this moment in my mind wishing the chance to go back and listen to better judgment and select old faithful. Why is it sometimes so easy to depart from our better judgment. For once I’d like to walk hand in hand, side by side, arm in arm with my better judgment. Sadly, I left my better judgment and walked off into Kroger alone. I selected the car cart. Who Bought This Toy?

Children are noisy. We try to teach our children the difference between outside and inside voice. The two voices is a difficult concept for the toddler. The toddler’s normal tone of voice is forever at a loud whine. When I talk to other parents of three-year-olds I find that whining loudly is pretty standard for toddlers. We have a lot of toys that make noise. I think the majority of toys for small children make noise and flash lights. Jessie has outgrown the phase of having mostly noise making toys and her toys require her to use her imagination. Jessie … Continue reading

Toddler Behavior in Restaurants

We’ve all seen screaming toddlers in nice, quiet restaurants. Before I was a mother, I resented the parents who took their children into the restaurant and didn’t make them behave properly. Now, I sympathize with them. I am one of them. It isn’t that I don’t try to make my toddler behave properly when we are in a restaurant. I try. It’s just that I am not always successful in my attempts. My son’s behavior seems to depend on a number of factors: fatigue and hunger. One of the things that I learned quickly is that my son hates waiting … Continue reading

Toddler Emergency Room Visits

Have you ever thought of what you would need to do if your child was hurt or sick enough to be taken to the emergency room? Do you have a checklist of emergency information? I had never thought of what I would do in the event of an emergency until my son got seriously ill. My toddler has been sick and my only thought was to take him to our pediatrician. Now that the weekend is upon us and my son is getting worse, I am faced with thinking about a back-up plan. What would I do if he needed … Continue reading
